Level : Difficult
Sahara – it is a sea of sand, black rocks, dried-up rivers called wadi. For many hundreds of years this was a home for Berber tribes who built ksar fortresses using adobe, who dug deep wells along the caravan routes, who grew wheat and dates in the oases.
We shall depart for Mauritania, a country which territory is almost fully covered by the sand dunes of the Sahara. Reaching Adrar Region from Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital, we shall find ourselves in the middle of this country and join a camel caravan going south. We shall experience over 200 kilometers of real desert where nothing will remind us of today’s modern civilization.
We shall get on a trip to a fairy-tale country where time has stopped, where distance is measured in getting from one water source to another and where human life depends on the life of his camel. A Real Big Adventure is awaiting us!

Upon arriving in Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital (this name means in Berber: “places where the wind blows”) we shall get our rooms in a hotel.
Departing for an hours-long ride across the desert we shall go north-east, to Adrar Region.
There is a famous Eye of the Sahara in the vicinity of Ouadane. It is an enormous crater in the middle of the desert.
We shall spend the morning hours seeing sites around the village. Towards the evening, when the heat of the day shall go down, we will set out for the desert.
Today our journey leads us across the limitless ocean of sand.
One may think that Sahara is only an ocean of sand, without any life and with no people in it. Yet this is not so!
Arriving at a wadi, a dry riverbed (also called oued), we can witness the climate changes on our planet.
Moving on along the rocks we can see ancient inrushes which may contain rock art that is spread all across the Sahara.
Our route is set along the ancient caravan track. It was always established from one water well to the next one.
All around us, once again, is a sea of sand covered with seemingly static sand dunes.
Rocks appeared on the horizon. This means that water will be available soon. And that there are some people on the horizon.
We return to civilization, at last. A small village called Tichit is located in an oasis on the road that connects the capital with Mauritania’s eastern regions.
The Tuareg fortress in Tichit, yet another ksar, is on the World Heritage List of the UNESCO.
We return to Nouakchott following the road across the desert. The ride will take about 6 hours. We shall stop halfway at the ephemeral lake Aleg.
We shall leave for the airport from where we shall fly north, on our way home.
