Altai is the center of Asia. Many travelers, scientists and esoterica adherents directed their attention to this area. We shall make a trip through Altai’s south-western part which lies far away from well-trodden touristic routes. Kazakstan is awaiting us!
Trekking through the Katon-Karaghai National Park in Kazakhstan along the Belaya Berel river, across a fairy-tale taiga forest that covers mountain slopes, we shall reach the Kokkol waterfall and see the Rerikh stone. Close by is Siberia’s highest mountain—Belukha, from which the Berel glacier is coming down. On the way back to Ust-Kamenogorsk we shall visit one more local wonder of nature—colored clay mountains called Kyzyl-Kerish

After our arrival in Ust-Kamenogorsk we shall ride to the east of the region: our goal is a settlement called Katon-Karaghai, the center of the Katon-Karaghai National Park which embraces mountains and taiga forests.
After getting to Berel, the last habitation on our trek, we shall put on our rucksacks and walk upon an old road leading to the southern foothills of the Belukha.
When we reach Belukha’s foothills, one of Altai’s wonder will be there for us: the Kokkol waterfall.
We shall climb to the Berel glacier that is coming down from Belukha. Since we do not have any special mountain-climbing equipment, we can only walk up to the level of 2 kilometers down from the summit.
We are turning back to go towards Berel. We shall once again experience trekking across alpine meadows and woods that seem to have come straight from Russian fairy-tales.
Crossing the Belaya Berel and arriving in the settlement of the same name on its shore, we shall return to the guest house in an off-road UAZ vehicle.
Leaving towards Ust-Kamenogorsk. On the way we shall visit lake Zaisan and a landmark nearby called Kyzyl-Kerish.
We leave the hospitable Kazakhstan. From Ust-Kamenogorsk one can either take a flight to Moscow or travel overland to Barnaul, the administrative center of Russia’s Altai Krai.
