Treking in Mari El.
Yoshkar-Ola – Pugachov’s oak tree – Mushyl (Sea Eye) lake – Abdayevo (Karman-Kuryk) – Yoshkar-Ola – Kozmodemyansk – Usoly – Alamner hill – Kozmodemyansk
During our trip through the Upper Volga’s Mari El Republic we will experience the natural beauty of this region, learn about its magnificent past and about today’s everyday lives of the Mari, a Finno-Ugric ethnic group, whose ancestors and related ethnicities inhabited a thousand years ago the territories of today’s Moscow, Vladimir, Yaroslavl.
Our trip will lead us to the legendary Pugachov’s oak tree, we shall see the karst lake called Sea Eye (Mushyl) lake and get up on top of the Karman-Kuryk, which can be an ancient site or an anomalous hill structure. We shall discover the beauty of uncelebrated Russia in Yoshkar-Ola, Mari El’s capital, enjoy the views over the Volga from the top of the old fortress on the Alamner hill and stroll through the streets of Kozmodemyansk which is supposed to have had been the prototype of the famous Vasyuki town from the satirical novel The Twelve Chairs: its protagonist Ostap Bender posing as a chess grandmaster participated in a chess tournament there…

Departing from Mari El’s capital, Yoshkar-Ola, we shall ride to Mariy Chodra National Park where we shall hike on the nature trail past Pugachov’s oak tree heading for the Kugu-Yer lake.
We shall get to one of Russia’s nature wonders—karst lake Mushy (Sea Eye) and continue from there to the sandy shores of Ilet river.
Close to Abdayevo village one of Mari El’s anomalous sites: Karman-Kuryk, a hill with a perfect rectangular shape. Is this a natural object or a human creation?
Reaching Kozmodemyansk, we shall take the route along the Volga. We shall hike to Alamner hill where at various times a Cheremis and a Russian fortress stood. We shall set up camp on the shore of the Volga.
Returning to Kozmodemyansk we shall take a sightseeing rout around the city. It is assumed to be the prototype for Vasyuki, the place of an episode in The Twelve Chairs satirical novel by Ilf and Petrov.
