During our trip through the Upper Volga’s Mari El Republic we will experience the natural beauty of this region, learn about its magnificent past and about today’s everyday lives of the Mari, a Finno-Ugric ethnic group, whose ancestors and related ethnicities inhabited a thousand years ago the territories of today’s Moscow, Vladimir, Yaroslavl.
Our trip will lead us to the legendary Pugachov’s oak tree, we shall see the karst lake called Sea Eye (Mushyl) lake and get up on top of the Karman-Kuryk, which can be an ancient site or an anomalous hill structure. We shall discover the beauty of uncelebrated Russia in Yoshkar-Ola, Mari El’s capital, enjoy the views over the Volga from the top of the old fortress on the Alamner hill and stroll through the streets of Kozmodemyansk which is supposed to have had been the prototype of the famous Vasyuki town from the satirical novel The Twelve Chairs: its protagonist Ostap Bender posing as a chess grandmaster participated in a chess tournament there…
