Vladikavkaz - Rokkski tunnel - Keli plateau - Keli Lake - Tsiteli-khati lakes - Keli Pass - Upper Baghiati - Leningor - Tskhinval - Tyr monastery - Vladikavkaz

We shall cross the Caucasian mountain range and ride through the Rokski tunnel arriving in the Republic of South Ossetia where our goal will be the Keli plateau, a hidden gem of this mountainous area. One can find high altitude lakes there, filled with crystal-clear water, surrounded by alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. Humans rarely visit this area, and no tourists have come here for almost 30 years. After our trip we shall visit some of Ossetia’s ancient churches and witness the destruction left behind by the war that raged here recently. We shall also walk through unpretentious streets of Tskhinval, South Ossetia’s capital.

From the airport in Vladikavkaz we shall travel south on the Transcaucasian highway. Crossing the Russian border we enter the Republic of South Ossetia via the Rokski tunnel

Day 2
Day 2

Our day-trip leads around the Kelistba lake [Crater Lake], the largest water body in South Ossetia. It is covered by ice most of the year. Mountain peaks stand around its shores topping 3000 meters so that many of them are covered with permanent snow.

A radial day trip to Tsiteli-khati lakes hidden in the Kharuli mountain range. A larger and a smaller lake exist there, with no river flowing into them, and both lakes are drainless. Their water supply is only from melting mountain snows.

Day 4
Day 4

Today we undertake a radial day-trip to one more gem of the Caucasian mountains—the Archvebistba lake.

Day 5
Day 5

We pack up our base camp and trek to the Keli pass from where we shall descend along the Ermanis-tskali river back to the Transcaucasian highway.
