Description

Simferopol - Chistopol'e - Zolotoye Bay - Novootradnoe - the Cemmerian Wall - Uzunlar Lake - the Opuk reserve - Yakovenkovo  -Zavetnoye - Kerch - Simferopol

There existed several walls on the Kerch Peninsula (Crimea) that inhabitants of the ancient Bosporan Kingdom, with Panticapaeum (today’s city of Kerch) as its capital, had built in order to create a defense line against the nomads. The Greeks had to protect themselves against the raids by Cimmerians, Scythians and Sarmatians. Such walls that were several meters high extended for dozens of kilometers. They were additionally fortified by erecting towers; also passages and gates were created. Cimmerian Wall is survived best of all, it was built from the Kazantip Bay in the north to the Uzunlar Lake in the south.

We shall start our trip at Porosta, one of ancient sites. Proceeding along the shore of the Azov Sea we shall walk across the steppe landscape to the beginning of the Cimmerian Wall. Following the wall we shall cross the Crimea from sea to sea. At the end of the trip we shall return to Kerch.

During the trip we shall see endless expanses of the steppe full of flowers, ancient ruins of Greek cities, beaches of the Azov and the Black Sea; we shall also learn various difficulties of trekking across the arid region of the steppe.
