Chara – Chara Sands – Tayozhnoe Lake – Sinelga – Kodar Range – BorLag - Chara
Chara Sands desert is called a “wonder of nature”. This wonder has been given the status of a natural geological monument, and its strange and, kind of, “wrong” location (indeed, this desert is surrounded by taiga and endless bogs) is puzzling and invites many questions.
Most importantly, this is a real northern desert, in the middle of the permafrost realm! Also, this desert gets larger, it advances on the taiga, and its tallest sand dune rises 80 meters above the average level of the desert.
In the Kodar Mountains at the Stanovoye Upland, quite close to this remarkable desert, there existed one of the mysterious and most secret locations of the whole Soviet Union: a uranium mine where one of the first batches of weapon-grade uranium was mined in order to create the first Soviet atomic bomb.
