Voronezh – Kostyonki – Storozhevoye Pervoye – Devitsa – Korotoyak – Divnogoriye – Liski – Voronezh
Riverbanks of the Don in the Voronezh Region feature cliffs and ravines that cut into the chalk rock for dozens and even hundreds of meters. There are feather-grass steppes and oak groves all around here. It is the history of our country spanning thousands of years. One of the oldest skeletons of the prehistoric man in Europe was found here at the Don. There was a site of Stone Age humans here, those who hunted mammoths and then used their bones for building a home for themselves. Caves that were made in the chalk rock served as a refuge for monks and before them for the Khazar and Alan warriors. And in the 20th century these places on the Don saw fierce battles against German invaders during the Great Patriotic War.
Our trip starts in the village called Kostyonki where there is a famous Stone Age site known in Europe. Locals keep finding mammoth bones in the ravines. From here we shall proceed southwards along the Don passing many ravines and chalk slopes. From time to time we shall encounter monuments erected to commemorate Soviet soldiers who fell here during the war. At the end of the trip we shall see “marvels”, i.e. residual rock pillars, or buttes, that were created by the deposits of seashells during millions of years when the region of whole Voronezh Oblast was located at the bottom of the ocean…
