Karelia is a country of forests, cliffs, rapidly flowing rivers and myriads of lakes. Somewhere in the middle of that sacred region Vottovaara mountain rises, a sacred site for local inhabitants—the Saami. Many people would translate this name as “Death Mountain”, but in reality the actual meaning of the name is “a rocky mountain covered with forest”. Besides, Vottovaara is the highest point of the Republic of Karelia: it rises to 417 meters above sea level.
Vottovaara is well known as a place where many unusual Seyda exist: huge stones weighing many tons that are placed onto small supports, or “legs”… No one has any idea so far, just how such structures came about, whether they were erected by Mother Nature or by ancient inhabitants of these realms, who may have descended from the Hyperborean civilization.
The northern side of the mountain suffered a lot from a wildfire. Most tourists visit this area. We shall, however, investigate the southern slope that is covered with the pristine northern taiga which has been hiding from human eyes ancient altars and petroglyphic drawings.
