The Pomors of the Kola Peninsula

Pomors are Russian settlers in the north of Russia that settled in these parts hundreds of years ago; they came from Arkhangelsk. Following the coast of the White and Barents seas in their boats (called lodyas or koch) they could reach even the estuary of Lena, the great river of Eastern Siberia. Pomors’ main business was in the sea: whaling, hunting sea animals, and fishing. Their immediate neighbors on the Kola Peninsula were the Sami and not infrequently they also had guests—Viking warriors from Norway.
We shall have a walking tour along the northern coast of the White Sea on the Kola Peninsula. Sami lived here for thousands of years ago, and their spiral stone labyrinths that are said to be dedicated to the sun are still left behind here. Later fishing hamlets of the Pomors appeared on this coast. In early 20th century there were hundreds of these hamlets here, yet today only around ten of them are still extant. Also, wonders of Russian wooden architecture can be seen in Varzuga—Russian Orthodox churches. The Soviet past is represented by a lighthouse and several almost deserted townships. The route of our trip is exclusively in the seashore area.
