Kem – Rabocheostrovsk – Solovetsky – Sekirnaya mountain – Savvatiyevskaya Hermitage – Novososnovoye – Bolshaya Muksalma – Pechug promontory – Bolshoi Zayatsky island – Solovetsky - Kem
Solovetsky islands are part of Russia’s culture, faith, history and grief. There used to be a Russian Orthodox monastery behind the walls of a mediaeval fortress. In the early 1920s Bolsheviks made this holy place into a prison, a detention camp. Today monks have returned to the ancient cloister. There they are resurrecting both the monastery and the churches or monastic cells scattered over all islands. Hidden by northern woods, they stand there like small beacons for our lives, on the shores of small lakes and ponds connected by ancient canals.
We shall take a 6-day-long hike around Solovki surrounded by the expanses of the White Sea. In the first days we shall cover 85 kilometers of the circular route around the Bolshoi Solovetsky island. We shall reach the Sekirnaya (Poleax) mountain starting from the monastery and visit Rebolda village as well as Bolshaya Muksalma island. On the last day we shall get to Bolshoi Zayatsky island in order to see famous “Babylons” which have remained there from the times when Saami people inhabited these parts.
