Description

Lake Baikal is the deepest sweet-water lake on Earth. To its west and north lies the Irkutsk Oblast which is quite well-known among tourists and its south and east is the territory of the Republic of Buryatia. North of the Selenga river that feeds into the lake there is the oldest Russian nature reserve—the Barguzinsky Nature Reserve.

Our trip shall lead us along the eastern shore of Lake Baikal. We shall wade across mountain rivers and creeks, ascend the slopes of Davydov Golets mountain, swim in the sacred water of Father Baikal and savor the energy of the areas which are still free of the onslaught of unorganized tourists from Slyudyanka or Listvyanka.

Trekking program*

DAY 1

We shall meet at the Ulan-Ude train station and take a bus from there to Zarechnyi, a township on the shore of Lake Baikal.

Leaving the township, we shall set up our first camp on the shore of the sacred lake. A creek flows nearby, its water coming from many springs is extremely clear. The water in the lake is also crystal clear and tastes well!

DAY 2

Going up the mountain slopes overgrown with cedars and larches we shall make stops at the mountain creeks. At the start of the hike we are trying not to be in the hurry so that we can adapt better to the change of the time zone, altitude gain and physical exertion.

We shall set up camp at a place where the summit of the Davidov Golets mountain can be seen.

DAY 3

We shall spend this day in our mountain camp doing some radial hikes in its vicinity. We shall try gathering berries and mushrooms, and prepare a nice, tasty evening meal. Weather permitting, we shall hike up to the top of Davydov Golets which is 1717 meters above sea lebel.

DAY 4

Going downstream the Kapustinskaya river, we shall come to Tolstyi Promontory. There is view from here towards the opposite side of lake Baikal. In front of us, only 40 kilometers away, lies Olkhon, an island that is considered sacred by all Buryats. Legend has it that the sun shines over it all the time and clouds never gather above it. Staying for the night on the promontory we can check ourselves that the ancient legend is true.

DAY 5

Today we shall do a short hike to Baklaniy promontory. There we shall find a good location for our camp, and our coach will conduct workshops for volunteers on how to start the fire with the fire striker and to build a shelter using available material. Those who are more courageous can also try their hand by doing extreme ascents and descents using climbing rope.

DAY 6

We still stay on the shore of the lake, swimming and fishing. If we are not lucky as fishermen, we may try getting some omul, the traditional fish of Lake Baikal, from other, more experienced fishers who might be passing by our camp.

DAY 7

Along the Talanka inlet, across marshy ground, we shall reach Rossypnoi promontory. From here, modern civilization is a stone’s throw away. Further out, we shall reach Gremyachiy township from where we can return to Ulan-Ude.

Out trip is, however, not over yet. 20 kilometers away from the capital of Buryatia, Ivolginsky Datsan is located, the most well-known Buddhist monastery in Russia. We shall take a bus ride there and set up camp in its vicinity.

DAY 8

Ivolginsky Datsan is the site where Khambo Lama’s incorruptible body is preserved: he, the head of Buryat Buddhists, asked in 1927 to be buried so that he would not witness the atrocities being committed in Buryatia by the Bolsheviks. There is a belief that he is still alive, and the Buryats are waiting for him to wake up to life.

After visiting the finely colored temples and turning prayer wheels by hand, we shall return to Ulan-Ude.
